Integrated Solid Waste Management
Thermogenics Gasification systems are a key element in an integrated solid waste management plan. Since the Thermogenics system has flexibility in operating rates and fuel types, it can help to overcome the periodic changes due to seasonal and even daily variations in the waste stream, as well as changes in the value of recycled materials.
When used as part of an integrated plan which includes recycling, as much as 90% of the total waste stream can be diverted from the landfill. The remaining material going to the landfill contains less organic material, which helps to minimize landfill problems such as groundwater contamination and methane generation.Energy Production
Because the Thermogenics Gasification System can produce a clean, cool gas, suitable for direct use in standard internal combustion engines, the system offers the flexibility for the production of various forms of energy -- from engine-quality gas, to high volumes of clean, hot exhaust from a combustor, to liquid alcohol fuels.
Depending on the system configuration (see Systems & Capacities), the Gasifier can be directly connected to standard spark-ignited gas engines, co-fired with diesel in standard diesel engines, used to feed a steam or hot water boiler, or provide heat for various processes, such as drying of agricultural and wood products. In the near future, as gas turbine technology becomes better able to handle low-BTU producer gases, gasifier-turbine generator systems will offer significant efficiency and operating advantages.Feed Stocks for the Thermogenics Gasification System
The following criteria define suitable feed stocks for the Thermogenics Gasifier:The following feed stocks have been used successfully in Thermogenics Gasifiers:
- Heating value of 5,000 BTU per lb (2,800 kcal per kg) or higher
- Particle size of 2 inches (5 cm) or smaller
- Moisture content, after drying if required, of 30% or less
- Municipal solid waste -- refuse-derived-fuel, including plastics
- Shredded tires
- Dewatered sewage sludges
- Biomass, including wood wastes
- Automobile shredder residue (or "fluff")
- Industrial sludges, including paint sludge
